Step 1: Brainstorm

What is a prototype?

pro·to·type

noun

a first, typical or preliminary model of something, especially a machine, from which other forms are developed or copied.

What does that mean? It's a way to make an idea come to life before creating the final product. It doesn't necessarily have to function, but it is a more tangible way for a client to experience your product in real life.

For this project, you will be creating a prototype of your solution to a problem with a small group.  The 3-D printer will be the main tool that you will use to make your idea come to life!

Let's start brainstorming!

Start thinking of problems that you encounter on a regular basis. Are there ways things could be done easier? Could something be designed more efficiently? Is there something that doesn't exist that you think should exist? Think big! There's no such thing as a bad idea.

Come up with a list of 3-5 problems in which you can find some sort of solution.

How will you create your design?

In order to start creating your design, you should become familiar with a few different websites that will help you along the way.

Tinkercad: This is where you will manipulate your design and update the printer settings. Your final prototype will be created on this website.

Thingiverse: Feeling stuck? There are thousands of previously designed objects that are free to download and could help you think of structures to base your design from.

Spend some time exploring these websites and become familiar with them! These will be your main design tools.

Your Final Idea

What idea was your favorite when brainstorming? Out of your list of 3-5 problems and solutions, come up with a design that you could see possibly being transformed into a three-dimensional object. Now, draw your idea out on paper. Make sure to include a front view, back view, arial view, and any other perspective you feel is necessary to get your idea across. Be sure to label the different parts of your design. Keep your sketch safe to share with others on day 2!
